Small Mexican ceramic bowl with decorative loop edges. Each bowl one of a kind, with unique markings from the the firing process. Each is approximately 2.5" tall, 5.5" across, including loops.
This pottery was made by Silvia Martinez Diaz, one of the most renowned master artisans in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. She learned this tradition as a child from her mother, as did her three sisters. All of her pieces are created with a coil technique and traditional tools like corncobs, leather and stones. She’s the recipient of several awards, including the Presidential Award of National Ceramics Prize that was given to her in 1996.
Care:
As her pieces are unglazed and pit fired, as with much of the traditional pottery from Oaxaca, it’s both porous and fragile. While these pieces are food safe, they’re unglazed and pit fired, which means they’re porous. Given this, if they come into contact with greasy items like olive oil, cheese or other even avocado, they’ll stain. This is absolutely normal, given the materials and traditional processes. In time, it will form a gorgeous patina which will speak to meals shared. If you’d like to keep them looking as when they arrived, do not use them for food service and only for decorative purposes.
Wash by hand, without harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbers. They should also be fully dried before being stacked into a cupboard. Not microwave safe.
