This piece is the work of Sara Garcia Mendoza, a talented artisan in her own right and the youngest daughter of the famed Maestro Jose Garcia Antonio and Maestra Teresita Mendoza Reyna Sanchez. Their family studio Taller Manos Que Ven ("Hands That See") located in Oaxaca, is one of the most famous and beloved ceramic folk art studios in Mexico.
About Tallar Manos Que Ven
Over two decades ago, Maestro Jose Garcia lost his vision to glaucoma. He now makes large-scale forms from memory and imagination and his wife finishes the details. Many of their pieces are sea themed and showcase indigenous people in traditional clothing. His wife is his greatest love and muse and many of his pieces feature her face, complete with the mole on her forehead. Their adult children and grandchildren also work as pottery artisans in the studio, each interpreting the family's themes through their own distinct style.
About the piece:
Perfect vessel for bouquet of dried flowers. Made with red clay, signed by artist.
Height: 8.25", Width: Approx. 5.5".
Note: The vase is porous and will sweat if holding standing water so a plate should be placed beneath it to protect the surface below the vase. Eventually a patina will develop on the exterior, changing the appearance of the surface. Place a glass jar of water inside the vase or use dried flowers if you want to avoid changes in the vase's appearance.
